Rick Santorum spoke to the conservative Pennsylvania Leadership Conference last night. During his address he spoke about faith in the United States and compared it to the role of faith in western Europe. Here's what Rick claims is happening to western Europe because of secularism, "Those cultures are dying. People are dying. They're being overrun from overseas... and they have no response. They have nothing to fight for. They have nothing to live for."
On the other hand according to Rick, "More people go to church on Sunday in America than go to all of the sporting events in America held in a year combined." We're not sure where that statistic comes from or what it means, but Rick seems to find it reassuring. Here's the video:

And by "church" does he also mean synagogue and mosque or does faith only apply to Jesus?
Rick believes only protestant faiths are worthy of inclusion (just like most the GOP). All other sects will be drowned in the bathtub once that whole "seperation of church and state" thing is abolished.
Really - most religious people spend a hour a week at church. They (and those of us who aren't) spend more time reading the paper, listening to radio, watching freakin' cartoons.
Now Bugs Bunny may give me a reason to live - but this says nothing about the value of another continent. You can argue what it might say about my value - but I'm sanguine about this facet of my soul.
anyway, not sure what the hell any of this means. what a stupid fake statistic from a stupid, fake little man.
Yet all the religious nutzoid freaks in the press, on TV, the ones who gain the most attention, are...men. Hmmm.
Sorta blows your sexist pig bullshit outta the water, eh?
After all that, the numbers don't look quite so good, do they Rick.
A more interesting question is, how many people cut out of church early to make it home/to the bar in time for the NFL?
Or laugh my socks off at the comedy Yank, one or the other. Best sleep on it and decide in the morning.
he would have to find a real job!!
These guys have got to out number all the people who go to church on Sunday. Or at least, out number all the people who believe in the same polarizing, hypocritical, theocratic, extremist, religous dogma that Rick Sanatarium believes in.
...I can't help but wonder...
It's hard to watch a game and blog at the same time.
But it's easy not to go to Rick's Sanatarium church!
Is he saying that we're seeing the Decline of the West, a crumbling into ruin as we lose touch with our traditions and become infected with Mud People from abroad? It's kind of hard for me to read his remarks any other way.
here are some other startling facts and statistics (with just as much basis in reality) that you might want to have at your disposal.
1) on any given day more Americans eat medium-firm than shakes hands with a fireman.
2) the number of Americans who attend church at least once a week minus the number of Americans who masturbate at least once a week is a seriously negative number.
3) Lincoln's primary bodyguard was named Thomas Cruise. Tom Cruise's primary bodyguard drives a Lincoln.
3) percentage of Americans who protest in front of Planned Parenthood clinics each week: .02; percentage of Americans who get a "Brazilian" wax once a week: .1;
5) "Santorum" has eight letters in it. "lying douche bag" has eight letters in it.
6) the percentage of American's who approve of the job President Bush is doing is so small now that pollsters are starting to misplace it on their desks.
7) I forgot to put a #4 in and put two #3s by accident.
8) one definition of the word "rick" means "a painful muscle spasm," not unlike that sensation in your prostate before you inadvertently fart on the Senate floor.
9) all dogs are canines but not all canines are dogs.
10) apparently Craigslist is the hot place for job openings these days. Perhaps you should you start looking.
In order for a culture to thrive, it needs to vanquish religious fundamentalism be it conservative christianity, ultra orthodox judiasm, radical islam, or fundamentalism Hinduism. These groups of people are truly evil.

Believe me, I'm an Atheist myself.... at least on message boards (and well, I live in Texas! lol) our very exsistance is scary. "They are trying to take God away from us!! Oh nooo!" "Our kids can't pray in school! Ohhh noooo!!!" That kind of thing is a tool in some politicians/religious leaders toolbox to rev up their base.
I live in PA and this moron does not represent the average Pennsylvanian. He is now, and has always been an extremist who wants our country to go back to a theocracy. Aren't we at war with religious extremeists!? He never learned the lessons that Europeans did long ago, that church and state together spell disaster. Europeans are enlightened and empowered, therefore they are dangerous to a repressionist like Santorum. In keeping with the Neo-Con policy, attack any political enemy with all the insults and accusations you can throw at them. Clearly, European voices on the issues are a real threat to the Neo-Cons, or they wouldn't waste their breath.
"Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it over and over again." Hitler would be very proud of Bush
Nothing to live for? Ask my cousins in Germany about their thoughts on the difference between their beer and American beer!

It is not so much that we are losing our marbles but rather that we have ripped them from the collective skull of american politics and cast them out stuffing the void with chicken fat and prophecy.
The incredible racism of this guys remarks about Europe being "overrun" is beyond the pale. As for "'nothing' to live for" , my sister and her husband were in Europe last spring and loved it as much I did as a college girl thirty years ago...and were very wowed by the new trains. My brother in law is an engineer and kept taking footage of them- couldn't get over how smooth and quiet they are- they rode in them too, of course. Yeah. Poor Europe.
This is so untrue it is delusional.
Actually, on second thought he said "go to" and not "watch".
More people watch the Super Bowl than go to church, Rick.
Who cares? You'll see. In the coming decades, EU taxes will be sky high in order to fund the pay-as-you-go entitlement programs the younger ones will have to pay for their elders (who will be vastly higher in number). It's a downward spiral that causes societal (let alone cultural implosion) that hasn't been seen in centuries.
More and more conservatives get it. Leftists think their redistributionist programs are helping the less fortunate. It's actually hurting the poor by causing the general wealth and productivity of society to decrease.
You don't have to be religious to appreciate the benefit of a society with stable birthrates. Doesn't hurt either.
America is unusual in its reliousity and prosperity, which are usually inversely proportional. That's not going to convince anyone to become religious in itself, it's merely a fact.
That article is from the UK, which has 0.4% population growth (http://www.statistics.gov.uk/CCI/nugget.asp?ID=6), whilst the US pop. grows about 1%, though it is pretty much a secular country, despite the monarchy and established church.
In truth, an open society that welcomes immigrants, like the US used to be during its best years-- the ones conservatives supposedly look back to, becomes diverse and develops a richer culture. And doesn't have a problem with falling population, unless you mean white population. If the proportion of whites goes down a bit, so what? I suspect Rick thinks he knows what.
Also, Russia's economy is picking up, though the population, especially the male population, is shrinking. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/4845164.stm
Unless the rate of change is particularly severe, population growth is not strongly related to economic growth. A marginal difference like that is irrelevant. It's a bogus argument.
What he's really talking about is who's allowed to choose to have children, and keeping the stinking wogs out. As ever.
